The London Digital Twin Research Centre is delighted to announce the successful acquisition of a new multi-year project on Digital Twinning for Stroke Care, funded by the International Science Partnership Fund (ISPF) and managed by the British Council, in collaboration with partners from Indonesia and Vietnam. This project builds on the momentum from a previous grant secured in March, expanding our networking activities into research actions.

This project, lasting until March 2027, addresses the critical healthcare challenge of the rising stroke burden in Vietnam and Indonesia, where delayed hospitalisation for minor stroke patients is often due to mild initial symptoms. Our research aims to leverage advanced digital twin (DT) technology integrated with machine learning models for real-time monitoring and prediction of major strokes, facilitating rapid intervention upon hospital admission. The project’s objective is to develop, test rigorously, and validate this innovative approach at the Bach Mai Stroke Centre in Hanoi and other leading hospitals in Vietnam and Indonesia.

Dr Mallik Tatipamula, Chief Technology Officer for Ericsson Silicon Valley and advisory board member at LDTRC, received his Honorary Doctorate Degree at Middlesex University during the Graduation June 2024 for his contribution and services in telecommunications and related areas.

He has been at the forefront of the development of mobile wireless communications. He began his career at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras – working on the rollout of India’s 1st fibre communication system. His career has since unfolded across important roles at Ericsson, Nortel, Cisco, and Motorola, where he has consistently driven technology innovations in telecommunications. Central to his legacy are seminal advancements in the industry’s major architectural transitions, from 2G to 5G networks, including adapting Internet Protocol for mobile communications, laying the groundwork for today’s mobile internet landscape.

The London Digital Twin Research Centre have been awarded an ISPF networking grant by the Academy of Medical Sciences. Our new project, “Strengthening Global Partnerships: Digital Twinning for Stroke Care in Vietnam and Indonesia,” will bring together experts from the UK, Vietnam, and Indonesia. This networking initiative is a step forward in creating international collaborations for the development of digital twin technology in stroke care, setting the stage for future expansive research projects in this innovative field.

The Academy of Medical Sciences in collaboration with the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society is administering the Networking Grants funded through the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF). This will allow UK-based researchers and innovators to collaborate with international partners on multidisciplinary projects.

The British Council project ‘Urban Resilience in Agriculture Through Highly Automated Vertical Farming‘ was concluded on 12th March 2024 at the final workshop in Ho Chi Minh City. What did we achieve in this project? IoT for urban agriculture”? Can Cloud-based IoT solutions be sustainable, aligning with UN’s SDGs? How about the awareness and study the environmental and economic impacts? Watch this video below that summarises what we do and achieve in the project where our London Digital Twin Research Centre and Department of Law and Social Sciences at Middlesex University teamed up with Van Lang University.

Project team members from UGM and LDTRC, Lutfan Lazuardi, Novi Zain Alfajri, Hanifah Wulandari, and Huan X Nguyen, paid visits to the Stroke Centre at Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi) and Department of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases at VNU University of Medicine and Pharmacy (VNU-UMP). Dr Mai Duy Ton, Director of the Stroke Centre and Prof Le Ngoc Thanh, rector of the VNU-UMP, presented the hospital facilities and hold discussions on the common research topics for collaborations.

In addition, Prof Huan Nguyen and Dr Souvik Barat (TCS India) then presented the research outcomes from the project to the hybrid audience at VNU – International School in Hanoi, within the workshop “Digital Twin technology for Healthcare: Insights and Perspectives,” where leading researchers from VNU-IS, Dr. Lê Duy Tiến, Dr. Chu Đình Tới and Dr. Lê Đức Thịnh, hold productive discussions on various pressing healthcare issues and challenges in Vietnam with the project team.

Digital twin technology is growing rapidly across multiple industries. From race cars to the human heart to the entire country of Canada, a look at how these virtual replicas use real-time data to model and predict the future.

Together with colleagues Prof. Valeria Panebianco, Dr. Ilenia Rapisarda (from Italy) and Dr Andrew Vickers (from USA), Prof. Huan Nguyen delivered a lecture and discussed if, when and how radiology will meet digital twin in the panel “The Radiologist of the Future: Connecting the Digital Twins and the Human Being” at the European Congress of Radiology 2024 in Vienna, Austria, the most prominent event for radiology in Europe, attracting 18,000+ radiology professionals and researchers around the world.
