London, UK (1 July 2026) – The London Digital Twin Research Centre (LDTRC) at Middlesex University London successfully hosted its third monthly PhD/Postdoctoral Workshop Series at the Faculty of Science and Technology, bringing together academics, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and doctoral students for a multidisciplinary exchange of ideas spanning artificial intelligence, engineering, communication networks, and disaster resilience. The event forms part of LDTRC’s ongoing commitment to supporting early career researchers (ECRs), fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthening international research partnerships.


The workshop was officially opened by Professor Huan X. Nguyen, Director of the London Digital Twin Research Centre, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for doctoral researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and academic staff to share research, develop collaborations, and engage with leading international experts. Building on the success of the first two workshop series, the event continued to provide a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange across disciplines and institutions.

The programme featured three distinguished international speakers from Australia and Northern Cyprus, alongside presentations from Middlesex University’s doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. The first keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Fengling Han, Associate Professor at RMIT University, Australia. In her talk, “Careers in Australia: A Case of Higher Education Job and Life in RMIT/Melbourne, Australia,” Prof Han shared insights into Australia’s higher education sector, academic career pathways, research opportunities, and the country’s vibrant multicultural environment. She also introduced recent developments in open-source artificial intelligence infrastructure, including secure and privacy-preserving approaches to deploying large language models and AI-powered applications

The second keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Yong Feng of Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. Professor Feng introduced the audience to advances in Terminal Sliding Mode (TSM) Control, a robust control methodology that enables fast finite-time convergence and high-precision system control. Drawing on decades of research and industrial applications, he demonstrated how modern sliding mode control techniques have evolved to address challenges such as singularity, robustness, and chattering, with applications ranging from robotics and mechatronics to renewable energy systems and digital twin technologies.

Professor Enver Ever from Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) concluded the invited speaker programme with a presentation entitled “Public Safety Networks: Early Wildfire and Disaster Detection Systems.” His talk examined recent global wildfire and earthquake events and showcased innovative approaches using wireless sensor networks, multimedia sensing technologies, and intelligent communication systems to enhance early warning capabilities and improve resilience during natural disasters. The presentation also highlighted ongoing research into post-earthquake communication systems designed to maintain connectivity when conventional infrastructure is disrupted.
The workshop also showcased emerging research from Middlesex University’s research community. Ms Faryal Batool, a PhD researcher, presented her work on adaptive multi-hop routing strategies for three-dimensional wireless sensor networks, while Dr Khai Nguyen, a postdoctoral researcher, shared his research on interval observers for linear discrete-time systems and L1-gain characterisation approaches. Both presentations generated engaging discussions on future research directions and interdisciplinary applications.


The event concluded with a networking lunch, providing participants with an opportunity to connect with international guests, discuss collaborative research opportunities, and strengthen links across research groups and institutions.
